Technical Research Assistant (Brigham and Women’s Hospital)

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Working under very general supervision, executes protocols involving a variety of routine and some non-routine experiments. Through literature searches and conferences with principal investigator, may assist in determining the most suitable methodologies to be used. May develop some modifications of existing techniques. Calculates, transcribes and analyzes data using statistical techniques. May participate in training personnel, though not in a traditional supervisory capacity.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Processes human blood and serum samples. Work will include performing density gradient separations, staining of lymphocytes with immunofluorescent antibodies for the purpose of FACS sorting and enumeration of lymphocyte subpopulations, isolation of RNA for real-time rt-PCR reactions, proliferation assays, as well as ELISA and ELISPOT assays to detect cytokine production.
Processes and freezes patient blood and serum samples collected as part of an ongoing longitudinal natural history study. Maintains a repository of frozen samples for future and ongoing studies.
Performs flow cytometry acquisition and data analysis.
Maintains basic records of experiments, methodologies and test results in a log of work performed.
Identifies unusual findings and reports such findings to supervisor with suggestions for follow-up experiments and procedures.
Maintains equipment and supplies in a neat orderly manner.
Orders laboratory reagents and supplies.
Maintains established department policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.
May assist in the orienting and training of other employees.
Performs literature searches as directed.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science degree in a biological/physical science with 2-3 years of experience in any biology field. May consider a bachelor’s degree in another area of concentration, if individual has had some course work in the sciences and possesses practical experience in basic laboratory techniques.
Should have previous experience (2-3 years) of working in a research lab.
Familiarity with basic laboratory instruments, equipment and scientific procedures, usually acquired through prior work experience
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Must have a sound understanding of laboratory practices and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to analyze data using statistics and present it logically.
Must have good organizational and record keeping skills.
Ability to work independently under general supervision.
Must have good manual dexterity.
Must possess careful attention to detail.
On own initiative, ability to identify potential problems and troubleshoot problems as necessary.
Must be able to maintain a neat and orderly working environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Will be working with human samples.
Normal laboratory environment.
May be exposed, under controlled conditions, to radio-isotopes and other hazardous materials.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
None, but may assist in orienting and training other employees.
