TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE (Cambridge)

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard seeks a TECHNICAL ASSOCIATE, Genome Sequencing and Analysis Program, to plan, design, and execute laboratory projects that support the overall research goals of the program. Projects include optimization of reaction conditions, technology development, and pilot studies for cDNA sequencing. Responsibilities include defining basic parameters of library construction and sample preparation steps; testing and optimizing novel approaches that have the potential to overcome current bottlenecks and limitations of library construction and sample preparation for next-generation sequencing instruments; carrying out laboratory processes, analyzing results, and addressing problems; presenting results and participating in the design of follow-up experiments; facilitating the completion of pilot studies and monitoring progress; assisting in implementing changes in protocols or methods; and a variety of other duties.

REQUIREMENTS: a bachelor’s degree in biology or related field and five years’ work experience or a master’s and three years’ experience; at least two years’ work experience in molecular biology, genomics, or related field; solid technical knowledge and hands-on experience with molecular biological methods, e.g., DNA and RNA purification, cDNA synthesis, enzymatic manipulation of DNA and RNA, PCR, sequencing, microarrays, molecular cloning, and library construction; significant experience working with RNA; strong organizational and time management skills; and ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Experience with sequence analysis tools and genomics databases a plus. Creativity, scientific curiosity, and the desire and ability to improve existing technology preferred. Must be able to facilitate project completion, address technical problems, help determine the methods to be used in research, and summarize and present project results. Excellent communication skills required.
