Staff Research Associate (inner sunset / UCSF)

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at the University of California, San Francisco is a world-class research facility focused on understanding and developing therapies for neurodegenerative diseases of protein misfolding. The IND is a world leader in prion disease (e.g. ‘mad cow’ disease) research.

TITLE

Staff Research Associate II

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the cultivation of uninfected and prion infected cells. The Staff Research Associate will employ basic biochemical techniques as well as molecular biology methods to assess if previously infected cells have lost or still maintain prions. Other projects will be concerned with introducing specific mutations into the PrP gene using PCR and molecular cloning techniques and preparing DNA for microinjection to generate transgenic mice.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• B.S. degree in Biology or related field, and at least one year of relevant working experience.

• Proficiency in mammalian cell culture and sterile technique, as well as molecular biology (cloning, PCR, primer design) and biochemical assays (western blots and ELISA).

• Previous experience with high throughput drug screening assays and screening assay development and manipulation and containment of infectious material (BSL2/3) is desirable.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Computer literacy on both Macintosh and PC.
