Staff Research Associate III (Postdoctoral Position)

NCIRE – The Veterans Health Research Institute is a research institute working in conjunction with the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center. NCIRE has some of the countrys most renowned MD and PhD scientists working in partnership with the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and the SFVAMC to integrate research interests with the needs of veterans. Medical research is conducted in such diverse areas as aging, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer.
NCIRE has an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate III to work on various projects in the area of gene regulation, molecular genetics and cell biology of urological cancers. Emphasis on performing site-directed mutagenesis at this time.
Essential Functions:
Perform recombinant DNA techniques (DNA cloning and subcloning, site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant protein production, gel shift analysis)
Perform enzyme kinetic assays.
Perform DNA assays (extraction from cells or tissues, methylation, sequencing, and mutational analysis).
Conduct RNA & protein assays (RNase protection, RT-PCR, western and northern blot, microarray)
Perform histology techniques (immunocytochemistry, FACS analysis, histochemistry)
Compose and maintain protocols of study-related procedures
Produce written reports detailing results of experiments and analysis of results; draft manuscripts of results for publication
Present oral and poster reports at laboratory meetings, as well as national meetings
Assist with training of research methods and approaches to laboratory group
Assist with composition of grant applications
Perform other related duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
Ph.D or M.D.
Some years of relevant experience
Computer literacy with emphasis on Windows operating systems and software applications
Ability to accurately follow experimental protocols
Willingness to learn where there are gaps in training
Strong interpersonal, written/oral communication and organizational skills
Strong accuracy and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals
Ability to work under minimal supervision
