Staff Research Associate I (San Francisco, CA)

NCIRE – The Veterans Health Research Institute. Our mission is to advance veterans health through research. We are the largest nonprofit research institute associated with the Department of Veterans Affairs. We conduct research in many fields, including mental health, neurological disease, cardiovascular disease, cancer, bone disease, infectious diseases including HIV, and improving patient care.
NCIRE currently has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Research Associate to conduct research experiments evaluating the mechanisms by which HIV protease inhibitors affect glucose and lipid metabolism by using stable isotope tracer techniques.
Essential Functions:
Prepare human blood samples for analysis by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry
Prepare various chemicals for experiment use, including buffer solutions
Conduct standard biochemical and/or enzymatic assays
Maintain established mammalian cell lines
Perform experiments using routine molecular biology techniques such as nuclear acid purification, reverse transcription reaction, and quantitative PCR
Maintain detailed written record of work performed
Perform analysis of experiment results and findings, including data collection, entry, statistical analysis and graph creation
Perform supply ordering/maintenance
Perform equipment maintenance
Perform additional general laboratory management duties as assigned
Perform other duties as assigned
Job Requirements:
B.A./B.S. in biology or related field
Strong oral/written communication and organizational skills
Ability to accurately follow experimental protocols
Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks and priorities to achieve desired goals
Prior experience in a laboratory environment and basic knowledge of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and procedures used in biology research highly desirable.
