Sr. Field Applications Specialist

1. Accompanies Sales Representatives on sales calls in customers’ laboratories to provide technical and applications assistance in response to customer inquiries. Performs product demonstrations in the field. Supports conditional sales placements in the field through on-site visits and telephone communication. 2. Provides start-up applications training to customers in their laboratories. Demonstrates proper operating procedures with Applied Biosystems instrumentation. 3. Reports on activities in the field on a regular basis to Manager through written reports and regular telephone conversations. Reports on technical trends going on in the territory by relating customer concerns and issues to the appropriate people in the company. 4. Prepares and presents seminars to customers, potential customers and Applied Biosystems employees as requested. 5. Provides technical training to Sales Representatives. Collaborates with Sales Representatives, Applications Sales Consultants and peers to develop technical selling strategies. 6. Participates in the field test site determination process. Provides reports to Product Marketing personnel on new product capabilities and acceptance.
Education: Requires knowledge and skills normally acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) in Biology, Microbiology or Biochemistry, or equivalent experience. Requires 3-5 years of previous laboratory experience to include expertise in basic techniques related to assigned specialty. Experience in presenting technical materials in written and verbal form is critical. Previous experience with customer interface is desirable. Previous operation of Applied Biosystems’ systems or related instrumentation, such as the 310, 3100, 3130, 3730 and associated sofware is highly desirable. Experience with Sanger Sequencing, PCR, Fragment Analysis, Genotyping and Sample Prep is also required. Language: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the scientific community. Ability to write publications that conform to prescribed style and format. Math Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of science or engineering and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written oral, diagram, or schedule form. Licenses: Valid driver’s license.
