Research Scientist II/III: Cell Biology (south san francisco)

VistaGen Therapeutics, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company developing breakthrough drugs for disorders of the Central Nervous System (CNS) and diabetes. We apply our innovative in vitro embryonic stem (ES) cell technologies to discover and develop new generation drugs and protein biologics, both internally and through strategic collaborations with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. VistaGen’s ES cell technologies are being applied to the development of high-throughput drug discovery screens in the diabetes and neurological disease markets, as well as providing human ES cell-based heart and liver cell assay systems for applications in pharmaceutical toxicity testing. Our lead drug candidate, AV-101, is in late-stage preclinical development for epilepsy and neuropathic pain.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

In this position the successful candidate will report to the CEO and will be a key member of a team involved in the development of applications of embryonic stem cell technologies for predictive pharmacology, toxicology and efficacy screening assays. Experience with cell-based assay development is required, and experience with developmental biology is highly desired. The successful individual will have the opportunity to manage external academic and industrial collaborations, will be highly motivated, be a strong team player, and enjoy the excitement and potential of a smaller entrepreneurial environment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• Requires a Ph.D. or equivalent in cell biology or a related scientific discipline.

• Requires a minimum of 4 years experience in in vitro cell based assay development and validation.

• Strong scientific skills and management, the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary entrepreneurial environment, and a thorough knowledge of modern cell biology and stem cell culture technologies are required.

EXPERIENCE DESIRED:

• Knowledge of the development and biology of the cardiovascular system, liver, and/or pancreas.

• Experience designing targeting constructs and reporter plasmids.

• Hands on experience with real-time PCR and FACS.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Perform hands-on research in stem cell biology and assay development.

• Maintain broad knowledge of state-of-the-art stem cell culturing and differentiation techniques and in vitro applications, especially using non-hematopoeitic stem cells.

• Establish program objectives and priorities to meet organization goals and timelines.

• Evaluate projects on both near term and long-term basis.

• Ensure completion of specific milestones to meet timelines and budgets. Take corrective action to assure timely goal achievement.

• Help to manage outsourcing activities as well as recruit, select, train, direct, motivate and evaluate internal resource staff.

• Facilitate and manage group or project meetings both internal and external.
