Research Associate I/II – Lunyak Laboratory

The Buck Institute is currently seeking a Research Associate I/II in the Lunyak laboratory. The Buck Institute is the only independent institute in the U.S. devoted solely to research on aging and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and stroke. Our mission is to increase the healthspan, the healthy years of life. Awarded a federal grant to establish interdisciplinary research in a new field called Geroscience, Buck scientists work in a unique, collaborative environment that allows scientists to initiate studies quickly and respond to new opportunities in fields such as stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Our scientists represent a variety of complementary fields, including genetics, epigenetics, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioenergetics, age-associated disease; and technological disciplines such as genomics, proteomics, protein interaction networks and bio-informatics.

The Buck Institute, which was designed by world famous architect I.M. Pei, is located in Novato, California, 25 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

POSITION SUMMARY:

To provide technical support to Next Generation Sequencing Instrumentation. Incumbent is assigned a variety of standard laboratory experimental procedures or a limited number of specialized procedures to meet the needs of research projects. Works on problems of moderate scope in which analysis of situation or data requires a review of identifiable factors. Performs a variety of technical applications that are semi-routine in nature. Applies job skills and established policies and procedures to perform a variety of technical tasks and support operations. Exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices. Under general supervision, ensures timely and accurate performance of responsibilities for multiple projects or a single functional area. Prioritizes daily activities to complete tasks and projects assigned by others.

KEY RESPONSIBILIITIES

- Uses a variety of established research protocols/techniques to investigate a scientific problem.

- Maintains laboratory facilities and equipment.

- Assists in the preparation of protocols, record of experimental results. Analyzes and interprets results.

- Keeps a careful record of experiments in laboratory notebooks.

- Provides assistance in preparing research reports.

- Helps to develop new laboratory procedures.

- May teach specific techniques to Buck Institute employees. May provide technical services to other Buck Institute laboratories.

- Reads assigned research articles.

- Provide other duties as required.

- Upkeep Next Generation Sequencer

- Apply PCR expertise to required duties

- Apply basic knowledge of cell culture keeping

**There will be an 8-week training period for this position.**

EDUCATION:

BA/BS or MS/MA in Biology or related field and minimum 1-2 plus years of an equivalent combination of relevant education and laboratory training and education.

EXPERIENCE:

REQUIRED: Experience with PCR techniques and basic cell culture keeping

Previous experience in basic molecular biology techniques in a lab or core setting.

Experience with assignments/jobs requiring precise attention to detail and accuracy.
