The Project Manager will work very independently, coordinates laboratory genotyping and sequencing projects and is responsible for quality assurance. Supervises and trains approximately 5 FTEs. Performs and/or supervises non-routine, highly specialized experimental genotyping and sequencing procedures. Participates in the design and modification of research protocols. Designs and tests custom software applications for genotyping and sequencing data management and analysis; strong computer skills are a must. The Channing molecular genetics lab focuses on population and family-based genetic studies of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The Project Manager will be an active participant in over 20 research studies, report directly to the Laboratory Director, and interact with multiple investigators.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Independently performs non-routine molecular biology procedures including but not limited to assay design, genotyping samples with the Illumina platform, other genotyping and sequencing platforms, and gene expression studies. Coordinates equipment maintenance.

2) Responsible for the coordination of individual projects, including quality assurance, tracking laboratory supplies and scheduling to meet deadlines; sets priorities with the Laboratory Director.

3) Independently analyzes results and prepares data reports; may present reports at meetings.

4) Establishes new protocols and laboratory setups, for example establishing high-throughput system for genome-wide genotyping platform.

5) Uses, tests, and designs in-house LIMS software; communicates effectively with computer programmers and attends regular informatics meetings.

6) Responsible for troubleshooting problems and instructing others in highly specialized techniques, including training new technicians.

7) Supervises up to 5 Technical Research Assistants. Has direct management responsibility, including hiring, firing, discipline, evaluation, orientation and training of staff.

5) Proficient computer skills, especially database skills (Access, or other db experience).

Skills And Abilities Required:

1) Ability to attend to detail and to be precise. Sound analytical and organizational skills.

2) Excellent written and verbal communication skills, must be able to thoroughly document experiments, protocols, and data. Must be able to logically structure tasks and set priorities. Analyze data and present it.

3) Knowledge of biochemistry, genetics and/or molecular biology typically obtained through a bachelors degree program in biology, molecular genetics, biochemistry, or laboratory science. Broad knowledge of scientific principles and laboratory techniques. Ability to identify potential problems, communicate and troubleshoot them effectively.

4) Must be able to operate and maintain delicate electronic equipment and safely use and dispose of toxic chemicals and biohazardous materials.
