Primary Responsibilities / Reporting Requirements: Implements and runs cell-based assays to characterize and validate liver culture models for screening drug metabolism and toxicity in collaboration with industrial partners. Analyzes data from experiments using statistical software packages. Prepares data summaries for dissemination to the group. Participates in technology development in liver tissue engineering. Exercises judgment within defined procedures to determine appropriate experimental action, and works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of identifiable factors. Works to further refine protocols for cell culture and downstream assays. Reports directly to Director, Research.
Degree Requirement / Prior Experience: Bachelors or higher degree in a scientific or engineering discipline with at least one (1) year of experience working in academic or industrial setting. Mammalian cell culture experience, especially with primary liver cells (i.e. hepatocytes), is highly desirable. Basic knowledge of cell-based immunoassays (ELISAs, Western blots, colorimetric assays), PCR and aseptic technique using bio-safety cabinets is required.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE II – KENNEDY LABORATORIES
The Buck Institute is recruiting for an Research Associate II in the Kennedy Laboratory. The Buck Institute is the only independent institute in the U.S. devoted solely to research on aging and age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, and stroke. Our mission is to increase the healthspan, the healthy years of life. Awarded a federal grant to establish interdisciplinary research in a new field called Geroscience, Buck scientists work in a unique, collaborative environment that allows scientists to initiate studies quickly and respond to new opportunities in fields such as stem cell research and regenerative medicine. POSITION SUMMARY

The facility is fully accredited by the Association of Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Uses a variety of established research protocols/techniqures to investigate a scientific problem.
- Maintains laboratory facilities and equipment.
- Helps to maintain laboratory records (e.g., chemical safety, radiation safety, etc).
- Assists in the preparation of protocols, record of experimental results. Analyzes and interprets results.
- Keeps a careful record of experiments in laboratory notebooks.
- May prepare portions of research reports.
- Develops new laboratory procedures and protocols.
- May teach specific techniques to Buck Institute employees. May provide technical services to other Buck Institute laboratories.
- May research lieterature base for specific articles pertaining to a research project.

EDUCATION
BA/BS or MS/MA in Biology or related field and minimum 1-2 plus years of an equivalent combination of relevant education and laboratory training and education.
EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED: Generally requires a minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience with a Bachelors, or 0 to 2 years with a Masters, and demonstrated working knowledge of scientific principles.

The DOE Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, CA has an exciting research opportunity available. Under general supervision, will serve as a Research Associate or Sr. Research Associate and perform library construction tasks for various sequencing platforms according to standard operating procedures (SOP’s). Will be responsible for performing research assignments and analysis relative to library construction and clone management tasks necessary to meet the goals of the large-scale DNA sequencing effort. Tasks involve purification and modification of DNA, transformation, PCR, and database tracking. Emphasis will be placed on meeting the library production goals as well as conducting R&D experiments to improve library quality and cloning efficiency in support of production sequencing. Required to assemble, analyze and report data and propose future experiments. Position will report to the Cloning Technology Supervisor.
The selected candidate will be hired at the Research Associate or Sr. Research Associate level depending upon the candidate’s level of experience and qualifications.
Specific Job Duties
Follow SOP’s to create a variety of libraries for 454, Illumina and other upcoming third generation platforms from prokaryote, eukaryote organisms, and environmental samples.
Create cDNA, Ribosomal panels, pyrotags and MDA (Multiple Displacement Amplification) and normalization libraries.
Perform library QC using PCR, gel electrophoresis, and/or quantitative PCR.
Assist in the creation of various cloning vectors for both small and large insert libraries.
Independently design and perform experiments to understand general library development issues relating to production needs and problems.
Identify areas of improvement and efficiency and offer feedback.
Troubleshoot & optimize current library construction protocols to meet scientific research goals.
Maintain an accurate and detailed laboratory notebook; observe and document any deviations from established protocols.
Update and maintain laboratory protocols.

Perform experiments using a variety of standard molecular biology procedures concerning the role of hypoxia and tumorigenesis. Analyze the effect of potential HIF inducers on HIF target gene expression and conduct in vivo and in vitro experiments. Conduct experiments to isolate DNA and RNA from cultured mouse embryonic fibroblasts and astrocytes. Assist in writing papers, manuscripts, journal articles, and proposals for research. Manage laboratory, including providing work direction and training for undergraduate lab assistants, ordering supplies and equipment, serving as safety coordinator and other duties related to laboratory administration.
