Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is a bench scientist. Genetic analysis using the Affymetrix arrays (DMET, 3 IVT and whole transcript gene expression arrays). *Excellent skills in experimental design, implementation, troubleshooting, and data analysis. *Experience handling large datasets generated from DNA and/or Microarray analysis. *Performs RNA extraction, total RNA quality analysis and cDNA synthesis from a variety of sources including FFPE tumor samples using approved standard operating procedures. *Perform absolute and/or relative quantification of gene expression levels using real-time PCR methods. *Review of gene expression data, gene expression protocols and final reports. *Performs DNA purification and quantification, gel electrophoresis, and normalization. *Performs routine and non-routine genotyping assays including DNA sequencing, gel based assays and endpoint analysis. *Performs the laboratory portion of the assay design and development and validation process with including optimization of PCR conditions. *Assay design for the detection human genetic variations using bioinformatic software and other appropriate resources. *Perform literature searches in support of the scientific efforts at Gentris. *Develops protocols and methods for evaluating and analyzing various types of genomics data. *Assists in the writing, editing, and implementing standard operating procedures, material requirements documents, and other essential documentation. *Mentoring and training staff in the junior scientists positions. *Communicate ongoing project/study progress and act as the key interface to clients.
Minimum requirements include a Biological Science degree (BS+4, MS+2) with Industry experience, Biotech / Pharmaceutical / Drug Discovery. Candidates must have working experience with molecular biology techniques, and knowledge of advanced molecular biology techniques especially with RNA and microarray chip technology. Must be detail-oriented. Ability to think and work independently.

Must be able to multitask and have good time management skills. Must be able to work in a team atmosphere, have experience in aseptic techniques, and have a positive attitude toward work environment.

Associate Scientist (Level II) (Cambridge, MA)

An Associate Scientist (Level II) will work in the Research Biology Department at the ALS-Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, MA to support in vivo and in vitro validation of candidate therapeutics in murine models of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This candidate will be responsible for the following three jobs:
1. Weekly genotyping of transgenic mice using an in-house, automated Q-PCR platform.
2. Support and development of enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for weekly, large-scale pharmacokinetic studies.
3. Development of assays for protein characterization such as immunoblots, immunoprecipitation, and immunohistochemistry.
The candidate will work closely with internal in vitro and in vivo research teams, as well as external vendors, to support ongoing preclinical studies in a mouse model of ALS.
Academic Qualifications and Technical skills:
The candidate must have a BS or MS in biology, biochemistry, or molecular biology and 3+ years of experience in molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid purification, PCR, Q-PCR, ELISA, and immunoblotting. Working knowledge of spreadsheet programs, is also required. Ideally, the candidate will have experience with molecular biology automation.
Strong communication skills and a team orientation are essential.

Primary Responsibilities / Reporting Requirements:
Implements and runs cell-based assays to characterize and validate liver culture models for screening drug metabolism and toxicity in collaboration with industrial partners. Analyzes data from experiments using statistical software packages. Prepares data summaries for dissemination to the group. Participates in technology development in liver tissue engineering. Exercises judgment within defined procedures to determine appropriate experimental action, and works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of data requires a review of identifiable factors. Works to further refine protocols for cell culture and downstream assays. Reports directly to Director of Research.
Degree Requirement / Prior Experience:
Bachelors or higher degree in a scientific or engineering discipline with 1-5 years prior experience working in a laboratory, preferably in an industrial setting. Mammalian cell culture experience, especially with primary liver cells (i.e. hepatocytes), is highly desirable. Basic knowledge of cell-based immunoassays (ELISAs, Western blots, colorimetric assays), PCR and aseptic technique using bio-safety cabinets is required.
