Math and Science Learning Specialist (oakland lake merritt / grand)

Educational Services Associates, a small group practice offering remediation and enrichment services, educational therapy, and educational consultation, is looking for a candidate with expertise in math and science. This person will work one-on-one primarily with high school students and middle school students for 15-20 hours per week during after-school, evening, and/or weekend hours. The hourly wage ranges from $22.00 to $27.00, depending on experience and credentials. The start date is on or very close to September 2nd.

Math:

Applicants must be fluent with concepts, procedures, and applications relating to algebra I, geometry, algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and statistics, including but not limited to the following:

• properties of exponents

• operations with monomials

• equations of conics

• geometric proofs

• graphs of rational functions

• logarithms and exponential functions

• series and sequences

• probability

• trigonometric equations

• vectors

• derivatives and integrals

• use of TI-83 or higher graphing calculator

• all math content that appears on the SAT, SAT II Math II Subject Test, and the AP Calculus exam

Science:

Applicants must be fluent with concepts, procedures, and applications relating to either Chemistry, Physics, or Biology, including but not limited to the following:

Biology:

• inter- and intramolecular bonding

• structure and function of macromolecules

• structure and function of organelles

• cellular respiration and photosynthesis

• mitosis and meiosis

• genetics

• DNA technology: PCR, gel electrophoresis, genetic recombination

• evolution

• phylogeny

• botany

• neurobiology

• ecology

• all content on the SAT II Biology Subject Test and the AP Biology exam

Chemistry:

• pH and acid-base titrations

• limiting reagents

• stoichiometry

• chemical equilibria and reaction rates

• calculating enthalpy changes

• oxidation-reduction reactions

• naming organic compounds

• all content on the SAT II Chemistry Subject Test and the AP Chemistry exam

Physics:

• linear motion

• projectile motion

• force diagrams

• rotational mechanics

• momentum vectors

• optics

• thermodynamics

• electricity and magnetism

• all content on the SAT II Physics Subject Test and the AP Physics exam

Strong candidates would also:

• hold a BA or BS with a major in a math or science field;

• understand math applications in biology, chemistry, physics environmental science, computer science or engineering;

• use innovative, non-traditional, and adaptive teaching methods to reach students with a range of learning styles (kinesthetic, auditory, verbal, non-verbal, multi-sensory, etc), and be eager to learn new ones;

• have experience teaching or tutoring middle school and high school students who are gifted and also have learning disabilities, difficulties and/or differences including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, executive functioning difficulties, visual/spatial processing difficulties, Dyslexia, Central Auditory Processing Deficits, and others;

• feel at ease and have a good rapport with pre-teens and teens, including students with oppositional or disengaged relationships to schooling, addiction, OCD, depression and anxiety, and other emotional/behavioral difficulties that impact learning;

• work comfortably with students who have a wide range of cognitive ability;

• be comfortable communicating and meeting with school staff, teachers, parents, and other professionals such as neurologists, audiologists, and therapists;

• participate in case management and student advocacy activities; and

• make a long-term commitment to working at ESA (at least 2 years).
