Laboratory Technician (Animal Technician) (La Jolla)

Qualifications Summary:
Bachelor’s degree (B.A./B.S.) from an accredited four-year college or university; or six months to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The amount of experience as a Laboratory Technician will determine the level (I, II or III) employed at. Must have skills and knowledge in the care and husbandry of transgenic mice, breeding/weaning of animals, humane methods of euthanasia (CO2) in lab animals, performing DNA preparation, PCR and determine animal genotype. Ability to follow written and oral direction, complete assignments in a timely manner, including the ability to be thorough in performing assigned tasks. Must be able to understand and deliver clear messages; have good interpersonal and organizational skills to effectively communicate with other lab personnel. Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
Job Description Summary:
Working in Cardiology will perform routine tasks to assist with management of a transgenic/knockout mouse colony. This will include breeding and weaning of animals; maintain specified records on assigned animals; perform tail cuts and animal identification procedures (ear tags or punch). Need to process tissue samples and prepare DNA; perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol and run agarose electrophoresis to identify genotype of animals. Will perform all aspects of mouse colony management and other duties in a laboratory performing molecular and cellular biology experiments, as required.
