Computational Scientist in Molecular Diagnostics

Responsibilities

Contribute to the development of a novel medical instrument for use in molecular diagnostics. Develop and validate computational models for the quantification of DNA using PCR and capillary electrophoresis. Develop algorithms and user interfaces for the analysis and visualization of electropherograms and PCR amplification data. Employ models of DNA thermodynamics in the design of assays to optimize the reaction chemistry. Utilize high performance computing techniques to accelerate algorithms.

Perform statistical analysis of experimental results to characterize artifacts and provide feedback on the design of the instrument and assays. Consult on statistical analysis of clinical data. Work closely with the assay development team to ensure that statistical best practices are used in the design and analysis of experiments.

Qualifications

MS or Ph.D in computational biology/chemistry, bioinformatics, statistics, mathematics, or physics

5+ years software development experience

3+ years of Java software development, including data visualization interfaces

5+ years experience in scientific or medical data analysis for experimental assays

Excellent cross-disciplinary communication skills

The candidate should have broad knowledge of molecular biology methods and computational models as well as in-depth knowledge and experience with at least one platform used for molecular analysis (e.g. gene expression, genotyping, DNA sequencing, or Mass spectrometry). The candidate should also have experience with complete application lifecycle development and demonstrated competence in software engineering. Experience with formal design control procedures is desirable.

Research Fellow Position in Stem Cell Biology

A research fellow position is available at the Massachusetts General Hospital in the area of stem cell biology and developmental biology of the skin. Focus of our research is to understand molecular mechanisms underlying formation of stem cells in skin development. We are seeking a candidate with a high level of research dedication and skill, who will participate in our research efforts and will be given the opportunity to learn and to work rather independently. Applicants must have strong collaborative skills and enjoy working in a team. The candidates should be capable of a thorough understanding of cell, molecular, and developmental biology, including hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture, histological analysis, and molecular biology techniques (i.e. cloning, PCR, western blotting, Northern and in situ hybridization). Ph.D. in Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical science, or related discipline with at least 3 years of laboratory experience is required. While not essential, prior experience with mouse transgenesis including transgenic and knockout mouse generation is highly desirable.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Genetic analysis using the Affymetrix arrays (DMET, 3’ IVT and whole transcript gene expression arrays). Excellent skills in experimental design, implementation, troubleshooting, and data analysis. Experience handling large datasets generated from DNA and/or Microarray analysis.

• Performs RNA extraction, total RNA quality analysis and cDNA synthesis from a variety of sources including FFPE tumor samples using approved standard operating procedures.

• Perform absolute and/or relative quantification of gene expression levels using real-time PCR methods.

• Review of gene expression data, gene expression protocols and final reports.

• Performs DNA purification and quantification, gel electrophoresis, and normalization. Performs routine and non-routine genotyping assays including DNA sequencing, gel based assays and endpoint analysis.

• Performs the laboratory portion of the assay development and validation process with including optimization of PCR conditions.

• Assay design for the detection human genetic variations using bioinformatic software and other appropriate resources.

• Perform literature searches in support of the scientific efforts at Gentris.

• Develops protocols and methods for evaluating and analyzing various types of genomics data.

• Assists in the writing, editing, and implementing standard operating procedures, material requirements documents, and other essential documentation.

• Mentoring and training staff in the junior scientists positions.

• Communicate ongoing project/study progress and act as the key interface to clients.

Qualifications:

Minimum requirements include a Biological Science degree (BS+4, MS+2) with Industry experience, Biotech / Pharmaceutical / Drug Discovery. Candidates must have working experience with molecular biology techniques, and knowledge of advanced molecular biology techniques especially with RNA. Must be detail-oriented. Ability to think and work independently.

Medarex Inc. is looking for a Research Associate 2/3 that will support the Transgenic Modeling group within the Animal Biology Research Department. Primary responsibilities will include providing technical and administrative lab support to the team developing new transgenic strains by assisting in the genotyping and phenotypic analysis of the large number of transgenic strains recently generated.
